Use a dichroscope to determine Dichroism and Pleochrosim of transparent, colored gems as an aid to identify them. That is, viewing a pleochroic gem through the dichroscope will reveal the separating of the gem's single, outward color into two or more internal colors.
This instrument can also often distinguish Doubly Refractive or Birefringent gems from those that are singly refractive because such stones reveal only one color through the Dichroscope. That makes the Dichroscope especially helpful in separating colored Spinel and Garnets from other gems of similar color and properties, because Spinel and the Garnet family are among the few singly refractive gemstones.
This Wide-View model of Dichroscope, of the respected Gem-A brand out of the United Kingdom, is set apart from other dichroscopes with its larger observation squares, making it easier for students to observe the colours seen in pleochroic gemstones, and to identify weak dichroism/trichroism even in very small gemstones.
